Mr Hunt, principals and teachers, ladies and gentlemen,
The Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) is privileged to organise the English Festival 2006, which aims at raising students and public interest in the learning and use of English. Our first-ever Festival last year recorded an encouraging 20,000 participants in its various activities, and over 1.6 million viewers of its TV programme on English usage.
This year, we have ten lively English activities to be run until July 2006. We are so delighted and thankful to have the British Council (BC) as one of our activity organisers. BC has devoted enormous efforts to enhance the English language skills of students, as well as the general public of Hong Kong, through creative approaches with a wide range of programmes and classes. Her expertise and enthusiasm is recognised.
Being one of the signature-programmes of the English Festival 2006, "Interacting" in Hong Kong provides a good opportunity for students and public members to learn and use English in a lively way. I would like to deliver my gratitude to "Interacting" who provided very professional performances and workshops to our participants. These performances demonstrate that there are numerous ways to improve English in the classroom apart from traditional "one-way" teaching style.
I believe that, students and teachers who participate in these performances, will cherish such precious experience and disseminate what you have learnt, to your schools and peers.
Finally, I wish you all fruitful experience and have fun today.
Thank you.
