Miss Li, teachers and students,
On behalf of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR), I would like to welcome all of you to the Parliamentary Debate Workshop of English Festival 2006 - English Debate Competition and Workshop 2006.
With the success in organising the English Festival last year, SCOALR is privileged to launch the English Festival 2006 with seven vivid school-based activities and two television programmes for English learning and reading. All of these diversified activities of the Festival aim to raise students and public interest in the learning and use of English.
We are very delighted and thankful to have the Hong Kong Parliamentary Debating Society (HKPDS) who organised this educational activity, English Debate Competition and Workshop 2006. The Society held a foundational debate workshop for both teachers and students in March and brought to you two impressive JUDC debate matches. I believe that you have learnt more about English debating. Today, HKPDS would like to extend your debating frontier to a new area, British Parliamentary Debating. I hope that you will find this type of debating both interesting and challenging.
SCOLAR always emphasises different ways to learn English. One of the ways to motivate students to learn English is through interesting interactive language activities. An impromptu debate that matches students' interest is itself a powerful tool to encourage students to express and defend their views in English. Today, all the students here will have an opportunity to debate in the Parliament. I hope you will enjoy it.
Finally, I wish you all a meaningful time today. Let's learn and have fun.
Thank you!
