英語節2007之「嘻哈學英語」大使計劃 -- 簡介會及教師培訓講座致辭全文

Welcome to this Teacher Training Seminar of the English Language Teaching (ELT) Rap Ambassadors Programme of the English Festival 2007.

The Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) has successfully held the English Festival in 2005 and 2006 and is privileged to organise it again in 2007 for the third year. The aim of English Festival is to raise student and public interest in the learning and use of English. Our Festival last year marked a successful return with nearly 40,000 students and teachers participating in various activities.

This year, we have eight lively school-based English activities to be run from now until May 2007. We are so delighted and thankful to have the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) as one of our activity organisers to organise the English Language Teaching (ELT) Rap Ambassadors Programme. ELT Rap is a new research-based teaching method developed by a team of ELT educator-researchers at the Faculty of Education of CUHK. Their expertise and extensive experience in promoting professional development in the education field are recognised.

Being one of the signature-programmes of the English Festival 2007, ELT Rap Ambassadors Programme provides an innovative way for teachers and students to experience the learning of English through rap lyrics, hip hop music and language arts. Through this pilot project drawing on popular culture, we hope that the experiences gained will help us identify the effective ways to enhance the learning of English by making use of the wealth of pop cultural resources.

Launching a new initiative requires the great commitment of both teachers and schools. Today's seminar well supported by teachers coming from around thirty schools is a good start. It is encouraging to have all of you to explore and experiment together with us.

I believe that, students and teachers who participate in this programme, will cherish such precious experience and disseminate what you have learnt, to your schools and peers.
