Professional Enhancement Grant Scheme for Chinese Teachers (Teaching Chinese as a Second Language)

The Education Bureau (EDB) launches a Professional Enhancement Grant Scheme for Chinese Teachers (Teaching Chinese as a Second Language), funded under the Language Fund, starting from the 2014/15 school year on a pilot basis for 3 years up to the 2016/17 school year.  The pilot run of the Scheme will be extended up to the 2018/19 school year.  The Scheme aims to encourage serving Chinese language teachers, through the provision of grant, to pursue structured part-time programmes on teaching Chinese to Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) students so as to equip them with the necessary pedagogical knowledge and skills as well as inter-cultural understanding in teaching Chinese to NCS students.

Applicants who commence the recognised programmes of studies in the 2017/18 school year and thereafter may receive 30% of the tuition fee of an entire programme of study, with the upward adjustment of maximum basic subsidy from HK$30,000 to HK$34,000 per applicant, upon successful completion of the relevant programmes under the Scheme.  In addition, applicants who continue to teach NCS students to study Chinese in schools offering formal local curriculum for a total of three years within the five years upon their graduation will be able to receive an extra 30% of the tuition fee of an entire programme of study per applicant, up to an additional maximum of HK$30,000.  To apply for this extra 30% of the tuition fee, applicants are required to submit their applications with the principals’ certification.

Applications for earmarking or reimbursement of grant are processed on a first-come-first-served basis.  The time taken for processing an application depends on individual case and the number of applications received at a particular time.  Under normal circumstances, the Scheme will notify the applicant of the result / progress within 30 working days after the receipt of the application.  During the peak season (September to December), the processing time taken will be about two months.
