SCOLAR launches new radio series to promote proper Cantonese pronunciation

The Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) will launch a new radio programme series targeting parents to promote proper Cantonese pronunciation.

A SCOLAR spokesperson said today (29 November), "Cantonese is our mother tongue, and hence we should learn to pronounce it properly from an early age. Parents can help their children accomplish this task easily in their daily lives."

She suggested that parents observe whether their children have any lazy articulation when reviewing their homework. "Parents may encourage their children to read aloud the text books and explain to them when lazy articulation is found. Parents could help the children try the word repeatedly until they manage the proper pronunciation."

Starting this week, the new radio series supported by SCOLAR will be broadcast for four consecutive Saturdays during the "Love Languages for Children" between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Commercial Radio 1.

The programme contains short plays and phone-in segments. During the programme, the hosts will share with parents the key points to help children avoid lazy articulation.

Parents may also post their questions onto the Commercial Radio website for discussion in the programme. The website address is http://www.881903.com.

SCOLAR has supported TV and radio stations in launching a series of programmes to promote proper Cantonese pronunciation since September this year.

Established in 1996, SCOLAR advises the Government on language education issues and on the use of the Language Fund.
